Exploring New Frontiers: Two Papers Advancing Emerging Wine Regions

I’m excited to share two key projects that reflect my ongoing research and consulting efforts, offering valuable insights for stakeholders in emerging wine markets.

The first paper focuses on Colorado’s wine industry, and is an economic examination of how quality signals—such as critical ratings, regional awards, and local agricultural practices—shape pricing strategies and market visibility. It highlights how events like the Colorado Governor’s Cup, combined with wines made from Colorado-grown grapes, contribute to building consumer trust and reinforcing the state’s regional identity. This research emphasizes the growing importance of sustainable practices and strategic branding for helping local wineries compete beyond state borders. Currently in its final stages of preparation for journal submission, this paper will offer insights into how producers can leverage these signals to expand operations and build market influence. More details will follow soon.

The second paper is a look at New Jersey’s evolving wine industry, emphasizing strengths such as improving wine quality and increased efforts toward sustainability. Through extensive interviews, text mining, and document analysis, my research highlights the importance of storytelling and brand cohesion, showing how New Jersey’s wineries can leverage their proximity to major urban centers like New York and Philadelphia to reframe public perception and position the region more competitively. With the right narrative, producers can move beyond outdated stereotypes and attract new markets.

The study also outlines strategies to strengthen distribution networks and calls for policy reforms that would support both urban and rural wineries, helping the industry grow more cohesively. There is untapped potential in expanding agritourism, with opportunities to develop better wine trails and foster collaboration across wineries. These recommendations aim to help New Jersey wineries increase visibility, reach broader audiences, and build long-term resilience. More to come!

Together, these projects emphasize the value of combining local agriculture, quality signals, marketing strategies and collaboration to promote sustainable growth. They reflect my commitment to helping emerging regions position themselves competitively in national markets. I’ll be sharing these insights soon on Vino Policy, so stay tuned for more detailed reports and actionable recommendations.
